Cambodian culture: Apsaras. Female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. (These photos were taken in Siem Reap)
It is said that a majority of Apsara dancers were killed under the Khmer Rouge but the tradition continues today by dedicated artists.
Watching these performances are an essential part to understanding and absorbing the values and history of this country.
In Siem Reap there are places to see dance performances. Usually it is included with the cost of purchasing a dinner. We saw a relatively good one at Suki BBQ. They had a mix of both classic and folk dances. We also saw an advertisement for a nightly performance at Temple Bar on Pub Street.
